Tyson's Dulles Plaza - Exterior Renovation

For this project, the exterior plaza area was renovated to create a new modern social gathering and planter plaza area. The final elevation of this plaza area was raised up to meet the new elevation requirements provided by our clients.

This plaza area renovation was constructed on top of an existing concrete rib slab parking deck. Our office performed an initial condition assessment of the existing concrete plaza structure. Based on this condition assessment, we designed the new elevations using lightweight materials such as light weight concrete, light weight cellular concrete and light weight stone aggregate.

Other design elements for this plaza area included structural steel design for the base of the shade sail posts and a new feature steel bar. Reinforced concrete piers/footings were also designed for light fixtures, bollards, benches, the steel bar, and fence posts throughout this plaza area. The final element of design in this project was a wood deck platform in the center of the plaza. This wood deck platform used an exotic hardwood called “IPE” for the deck boards.

Our office provided construction administration throughout the construction phase. We worked closely with the Contractor to provide our observations and to help quickly remediate any construction challenges during installation for all of these design items.
